Recap on the AI bubble deflating
With 20/20 hindsight, I see two things that kyboshed all the AI hype (and most of the AI pundits are not calling this…):

By Microsoft bolting-in AI functionality in Windows 11 (because Microsoft had a fear of AI FOMO[1]…), many end-users got to experience firsthand just how underwhelming it was (in terms of reliability…) So it made the consumer and retail market quite skeptical to it. If they hadn’t done that bolt-in, many consumers would have remained oblivious to just how bad most of it is, and the AI monopolies could have continued to hype for another year or two.

The data centers: once people heard about how AI (the way the tech monopolies wanted to do it, that is…) needed data centers, along with the sudden escalation in token prices, they realized it wasn’t going to be like simply using a new website or trying different software or [end-user] hardware (that you control…) It was going to implement a tech serf model of dependency, where consumers and businesses would need to continually pay tolls to the Lords of the AI manors, even if no new functionality had been introduced. [Old Model: make a new version; software company gets rewarded for its improved functionality with lots of sales -or punished with few sales if the product sucked! New Model: pay us, whether we gave you improved functionality or not.]
It was a hype scam done for a money grab. Not all AI tech is a scam, but most being pushed by the tech monopolies is. As I have always said: it merits research; but it does not at all merit you to bet the farm on it.
Watch the hypesters continue to resort to the “If we don’t do this, China will beat us!” argument. News flash: you got more funding than God, US AI monopolies, and you STILL lost to the Chinese! And even they are having reliability issues, and the token price honeymoon is ALSO over for them (they just did it better than you, like they do EVs -Bush/Cheney: “Hey: let’s kill out EV pilot research program!..Wreck ALL the cars!”)

I’d like to see legislation which requires:
- pay for, build and maintain onsite renewable (mostly solar rather than wind) generation and accompanying storage to provide for all net kWh needs of the project. Excess capacity sold to the local utility at reasonable rates. It is questionable whether any wind generation would not bring about noise issues, so this will either be solar power, or wind power in remote areas.
- strict noise pollution controls on the projects.
- account for all water use of the project, including not only onsite water use for cooling, but water used to generate any electricity by the local utility if the utility provides power for the project. Some of the water required to be harvested directly by the project, such as in onsite cisterns, rainwater harvesting etc. Strict restrictions on the amount of water that the project can draw from local underground sources or from the local water utility. Projects prohibited in certain parts of the country that are hit hard by water shortages unless those projects harvest from rain and atmospheric moisture all water needed by the project.
- strict requirements for heating and cooling efficiency of the project.
- vastly improved pursuit of criminal convictions for any local/municipal officials (elected or appointed) signing NDAs or making any other agreements with data center companies.
So, making the projects pay for their energy use is good, but badly insufficient, IMO. The information that they were not already paying for power (in some cases?) just shows me that these projects are not a result of capitalism and free markets pointing to profitable ventures, but poorly-enforced markets developing imbalances which are a result of unfunded externalities. As long as the projects are allowed to socialize the costs and internalize the benefits/revenues, which happens when the government is not doing its job, then these projects are more likely to appear more attractive to the shortcut-seeking semi-quasi-productive speculators who are building them.

Anthropic was the one who objected to its use for military applications; and Altman stepped right up, right? [Not that Anthropic are being choirboys in all this “AI is Dangerous” hype. They don’t want to come out and unequivocally and succinctly admit: “You shouldn’t be using AI for anything where failure is not an option…” That would harm their precious IPO!]
I am still betting Anthropic needs to postpone their IPO; OpenAI is out of the running with the Apple lawsuit; it just doesn’t make any sense at this point…
