Israel, I love you and I support your right to exist. I recognize the 2000 years of oppression the world has put you through. I recognize you need a safe place to exist freely in the world. I also see the Palestinians perspective and what the creation of Israel has meant for them. It has meant the loss of their homes and the promise of their sovereignty. 10%-20% of the population has been lost in two short years.
Prior to Israel’s recreation, they lived under the oppressive occupation of the British empire. Before that, the oppression of the Ottoman empire. Now they have lived under Israeli occupation for over 60 years. I see the same struggle for freedom in them as I do in you. Both of you are willing to fight for your freedom. Both of you are willing to give up everything for the security of your children.
Please Israel, I know that it’s all complicated. I know that having a place in this world is imperative and I would never suggest giving that up. I know that sometimes you have to fight for a place in this world. You have a right to that just like everyone else should. I don’t know what the right answer is. I just hate watching both people suffer. Can’t you grant them freedom? Stop the cycle? Do you not see your own suffering reflected in their eyes?
