Are We Holding Ourselves Back?

Forthwall and I had a good meeting today regarding some ideas. It sounds like he is going to pushing some posts soon. If we can’t find a path forward through those posts, I suspect we will start moving forward independently.

Then show you guys a proof of concept when we are ready.

Good old fashioned organizing for the right issues at the right time and not stopping until we win. This is a war. Think about our history. Populism is only as good as the population it represents.

Yeah, @Sciguy24’s ‘alternative’ to populism is really just another form of populism. At its core, populism is about mobilizing everyday people to push back against elites or systems that aren’t serving the public’s interests. When Sciguy24 talks about ‘good old-fashioned organizing for the right issues at the right time and not stopping until we win,’ that’s exactly what populism looks like—grassroots mobilization and relentless advocacy for change. The real difference is in the type of populism. Are we talking about an inclusive, progressive approach or an exclusionary, reactionary one? Either way, it’s still about empowering the people to assert their interests.

Populism appeals to the common man right? What if the common man wants to reinstate segregation? Then populism makes no sense. I believe in truth whether or not the “common man” likes it or not.

That’s why shared values are crucial. Populism is just a tool—it can uplift or harm, depending on the principles guiding it. A movement grounded in equity and justice can channel the will of the people while holding firm against regressive agendas.

I agree that a majority consensus can, and often does, lead to horrible atrocities! Populism, at its core (I think), is an idea that there should not be such a gap between the elites and everyone else and that everyone deserves a livable wage, safe working conditions, and respect. Again, I’m not sure, but I think it’s different from majority rule.

were you not just advocating for letting it burn a couple days ago? You may be a science guy, I am not sure if that extends to political science.

Then it really isn’t populism- its principleism. Your fighting for principles not populism.

You’re welcome to join the group. I also know that there were two others in the call last week. I was advocating for the editing with Capcut. I think one was named Charlotte, and I am not sure about the other name. I have sent a message to Kara asking about a method for contacting them, I have yet to receive a response.

Fair point, yet I think we might be debating semantics at this point. The way I see it, principles act as the guardrails that keep populism from going off the rails. Without them, it’s just a megaphone for whoever yells the loudest—whether or not it leads to a better, more equitable society.

Are you meaning populism as in “what the most popular opinion”?
I see it as “whats good for the populace”
There is no populace with destruction and chaos
Maybe we could try to frame it that way?

I totally agree with this. If we don’t fix the money in politics problem, we can’t fix ANY problem, no matter how well organized or how well intentioned we are. More and more, I feel the sole focus–for now–needs to be overturning Citizens United because if we don’t, nothing else will ever change.

We also must have other policies and initiatives in the works. There have to be plans to move forward with other policies and agendas. And what if we can’t get big money out of politics? Then we literally have nothing. We need to work with what we have now; everyone should focus on what they deem most important.

We need state by state polls, no national polls. State polling data is what congressmen and senators pay attention to.

Money out of politics is great, but a red herring at this point. With Democrats completely out of power it has no chance. Now preparing for what you will do when you get back into power that is another thing entirely.

The real topic to me is about applying pressure. That is what the people at their core are organizing to do. TYT seems wo wish for us to create a platform for progressives to run on. They way I see it is that is really half the battle. The other half is applying pressure to counter attacks on democracy. When it comes time and POTUS attempts to declare marshal law / ignores important court orders we need a huge response much like South Korea.

Personally, I don’t feel a need to engage with Trump voters at all. I’d rather take advantage of the system we have now and simply cut the financial balls off our corporate masters.

Democracy = What the people want. And “Populism” = what the people want. The problem that we have today is that too many of the populace are believing the LIES told by not just the GOP/MAGA but the Corp-Dems too. A REAL Populist movement would be geared toward getting the “everyday” person what they want. And when you do a populist movement like what Cenk is attempting you must do what a MAJORITY of the populace wants. Now that does not mean that you also can’t work on all the “social” issues on the side. But I think IF we were to get things like Universal healthcare, Free Education(pre-k thru college), get rid of electoral college, balance the budget, and redo Immigration and the US Infrastructure(roads, rail, airports, shipping, etc); the so-called “social issues” would become non-existent because the other side would have nothing to blame on immigrants, or LBGTQ+, or non-Christians, or anyone else.
