It's Time to Boycott

one other key high-profile boycott:
The Dallas Cowboys.

There are probably several other sports teams whose owners have supported Trumpism, but Jerry Jones and The Dallas Cowboys seems like an important one.

From 2020 (there are quite a number of others here, but it would be useful to zoom in on which ones have more recently supported Trump).

Jerry Jones Made It Very Clear Which Way He Leans Politically

Here’s another more recent and more comprehensive article about political donations by major sports team owners. Miriam Adelson (majority owner of the Dallast Mavericks continued her late husband’s extraordinary financing of Republican efforts (I believe he was a top donor, or the top donor, to Republicans/Trump in 2016).

Mavericks Owner’s $100 Million Trump Donation Dwarfs All Other Sports Owner Political Giving

Sports owners have spent millions on the 2024 election cycle, largely on Republicans. Among them, Miriam Adelson is by far the biggest player in the presidential race.

If TYT wants to be a credible leader in progressive politics it needs to lead these initiatives. We as individuals do not have the resources TYT has at its disposal. They need to rally people to achieve specific and achievable targets. You can’t lead from behind.

I hear you, and I get the frustration. TYT has a platform and resources we don’t, so it makes sense to expect them to step up and lead more visibly.

At the same time, leadership isn’t always about being out front. In a wolf pack, the leaders guide, but others protect from the back or ensure the group sticks together.

Maybe TYT needs to strike a better balance—taking charge when it matters most while still empowering people to move forward together.

What specific steps do you think would show that kind of leadership?

Here are a few things:

  1. By focusing all our efforts to get the money out of politics.
  2. By organizing boycotts of people and organizations who want to keep the status quo corruption.
  3. By organizing direct action campaigns.
  4. By bringing the human side of our issues directly to the masses. (ie. Interviewing families who have lost loved ones because of this murderous healthcare system, or organizing a memorial wall honoring those who have died from the negligence of this evil healthcare system)
  5. By not wasting time and resources on initiatives which have no hope of winning (ie. Cenk’s run for president)

I hear you, yet I don’t think Cenk’s run was a vanity project. It felt more like a way to give people an alternative to Biden and to spotlight progressive issues on a national stage.

Sure, it didn’t succeed in the traditional sense, but failures can often teach us more than successes. They help us refine strategies, build awareness, and learn what resonates with people.

What could we take from that experience to strengthen the initiatives you’re suggesting?

Thank you for your response. I’m not going to delve into the subject of Cenk’s run here any further. This thread is to discuss boycotting. I have a thread here for discussing Cenk’s campaign, see “Cenk has some explaining to do”.

And I’m not trying to hash the campaign out either. Just looking for how the lessons learned could be applied.

She mentions that in her opinion it is better to focus on the list of companies that you do intend to buy from, instead of focusing on the list of companies that you intend to avoid.

She also mentions that this list is not all-inclusive and that good places further to research companies and to whom they donated are:
1)

Navigating Boycotts and Boundaries: Key Insights from Two Videos:

I wanted to compare these two videos:

  1. Companies That Donated to Trump and Project 2025
  2. Would You Shop at a Trmper-Owned Business?

The discussions in these two recent videos highlight complexities in boycotting businesses tied to harmful values.

  1. Harm Reduction:
    • On a systemic scale, boycotting corporations funding initiatives like Project 2025 disrupts entrenched power.
    • Locally, supporting small, ethical businesses—even with opposing politics—aligns with harm reduction and strengthens working-class solidarity.
  2. Purity Politics:
    • Rigid exclusion hampers coalition-building and progress. Strategic engagement and nuanced actions better foster justice and democracy.
  3. Building Bridges:
    • Personal connections humanize opposing views, while thoughtful boycotts shift systemic dynamics without alienating potential allies.

Actions: Focus on corporate accountability, support ethical local economies, and embrace pragmatic harm reduction over ideological purity.

What are your thoughts?

I watched the second video and it was thought-provoking and somewhat nuanced. I responded for example to the lady’s examination of the issue of living in a rural area, and it is quite a different matter to cut yourself from the community of Trumpers in that instance. Your world gets a lot smaller, I can tell you from personal experience.

I don’t know what I think of the point made by one of her children that it is arguably better to buy from a local Trumper than to buy from a large organization that supports Trump. I might be ok with it. I guess it depends. The issue of humanizing the people we are criticizing goes both ways. Trump supporters have tended to otherize and dehumanize the opposition, but I think so too have some of us in the opposition done this to them. I am not equating the two sides in all things by a longshot, but just noting this “otherizing” and dehumanizing issue in isolation.

At the end of the first video, the creator suggested that we focus not on companies we are trying to boycott, but on companies that we regard as safe to buy from. This sounded like a good idea, and somewhat of an answer to the second video conundrum as well. The first video creator cited athletes or others who accomplish amazing things such as moving quickly through a bunch of obstacles, and they (she said) will advise to keep one’s eye on the path, not on the obstacles. So, this is not a cure-all, but may have made some sense.

It turns out that someone took her advice, and her points about where to look for information, and made a video of some of the organizations and people who donated to Harris, or engaged in no donations, or balanced donations. And so I’ll post that here and perhaps on an additional link:

One overall point here is that we should face the fact that there are some people who will go in the opposite direction of our boycotts. They will, for their own political reasons, boycott the companies we choose to patronize, and patronize the companies we choose to boycott.

I like that app. I had no idea apps like Goods Unite US even existed. I certainly hope they develop their youtube channel. The last video they posted was 5 months ago. Do they not realize the importance of word of mouth and social media?
