I didn’t know that about Gingrich (specifically that he was a key source of the Republican ad homenim attack discussion approach relating to political disagreements). This approach was always deeply insulting, I thought, to all Americans, as it so clearly betrayed reason and rationality themselves.

One thing I do want to say in response both to what I’ve heard out of her recently and to any discussion we might have as to her weaknesses:
I haven’t recently tried to verify this, but I believe she is weak on the Canada issue, but only if you know how to go after it. By this I mean that she has, in theory, said and done some of the right things, if you are a Maine resident and want to know how your Senator is fighting for you when it comes to the Trump Administration’s outrageous botched Canada policy. However she has conspicuously avoided (as far as I have been able to tell… though I have not looked recently to see if I am right about this)… the single most important aspect of where she, or any Senator, from any party, should be, when it comes to this issue: I have not heard her clearly denouncing the Trump Administration’s outrageous threats to Canada’s Sovereignty (i.e.: Trump’s coveting of Canadian territory, contemptuous insults to the Canadian Head Of State, discussion of Canada as “The 51st State”, etc.) Trump arguably has even taken some action in this regard in the sense that he and his henchmen appear to be behind fomenting some of the Alberta separatist movement. This I think is outrageous interference in the internal politics of another country (and an ally at that) and I doubt it would be tolerated if it were Canada interfering in the politics of one of the US states.
If Senator Collins wants to claim that she wants to fight to restore healthy business between Maine and Canada, and if she refuses to mention that the Head Of State of the USA has threatened the sovereignty of Canada with his 51st state rhetoric and such, then I conclude that Senator Collins actually does not want to do what it will take to repair at least some of the damaged Canada/USA relationship.
If I were a Canadian citizen, I would not soon consider doing business with the US again, based on this one thing. Instead I hear a lot of clever comments from Collins about Economics, as though she is the adult in the room focused on what is important. I don’t care how many mature discussions she might want to have about tariffs: unless she criticizes Trump harshly on his disgusting threats to Canadian Sovereignty, she has not shown good leadership on this issue. I hope her opponent is completely clear in his examination of the Canada relationship, and that he finds a way to get virtually all Maine citizens to understand how wrong Collins has been for leadership on this issue.
