You Don’t Have To Cry-Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
(1970 TV appearance)

I always loved the acoustic pyrotechnics used in this song:

  • the use of harmonics (the guitar chimes…)

  • the cowboy style boogeying meshed with jazz treatments

And of course: the vocals were great.

I think this recording is better than the album track (I better grab it now, before it disappears!)

Great over-tracking of Riordan’s voice to create a harmonic chorus. I could be wrong, but this song appears to follow the John Barry (composer of classic Bond tunes…) rule of music: descending scales are great! Use lots of them.

A famous John Barry song that demonstrates that technique:

I love the part in the song where the piano (electric piano? synth??) is hammering percussive high notes -was that the handiwork of Eno?

The Dead Boys did a cover of this song which was fine; but the original was great too. The drumming on it rules…

Bloody love it when punk bands cover old songs. Here is my dads old ska band (he is usually the singer but Ben the guitarist joins in here) playing the song Hard times by The strange tenants  just abit rougher than the original but my fav cover they did.

FM DJs liked to use this song as a backdrop to making announcements; I would cuss them out: “Get off and let us listen to this song! It’s so short!!” The jazz tune was great -and that surreal ending!
