Welcome to the place to talk about all things Florida!
anyone in Central FL / Orlando area?
The power structure of Federal politics is still state based. We elect congressman, Senators, and a President all from a statewide election. We need to focus on evangelizing our progressive message on a state by state basis and thus maximize our federal power. Personally I think best way to do that is by getting involved in local media. Bottom line, we need to make Florida progressive. How would you turn Florida progressive?
Who are some good progressive candidates for the upcoming election in florida?
I’m going to be more active in this thread. I think our movement needs to focus on issues which we can win, and work to make progress on the issues we struggle with. I think we can make more progress on a state by state basis issue-wise than we can nationally.
Hey everyone. Sorry, it’s been a minute! Currently We have a part time state legislature. They meet 60 days of the year, pass laws then go home. The democrats are basically non-existent in state politics. Only in the bigger cities do you see a democratic presence. We have a population of approx 21 million and carry 30 electoral votes. We have enormous influence on national policy.
By ourselves, we’re the world’s 15th largest economy. Agriculture is still the king here. This is a very business friendly state with no personal income tax.
Our criminal justice system still uses the death penalty as a means of punishment for certain crimes.
This idiot republican party has allowed concealed weapons to be obtained without any concealed permit or any gun safety course.
To change this state from conservative to liberal is going to take all the Avengers and Justice League to get it done. I don’t believe we should focus on getting liberals elected alone. I think organizing is the way we have to go. We should exploit every weakness and opportunity we can to win on the issues both conservatives and liberals agree on. 55% of voters decided they didn’t want government prohibiting abortion in the first six weeks and 57% voted in favor of legalizing weed. We didn’t get the required 60% but this was a very good showing – something to build on. What are your thoughts?
I saw this in the Orlando Sentinel today and I’m so angry! Florida is kicking kids off public insurance because it simply doesn’t want to pay for administrative costs:
Question: What is the best source for news in Florida?
I wonder if some some of the party switchers in the florida legislature are only doing it to head fake right, then go left.
