Appalled

Cenk always says WE ARE THE BOSS…Well as a member and so called boss I am appalled at Ana’s defense of Kimmel’s suspension. What Ana left out was the total context of Kimmel’s words and cherry picked the part to make her point. Did Ana here the threats by the FCC Chair. If she did she refused to state them.

There are many here who do not bow down to the TYT framing of events but are silenced and if heard are bullied to remain silent when the hosts rant against us. If are voices remain silenced is TYT any different from the MAGA cult.

Ana has been a supporter of Palestine and against Israel. She is 100% correct . What happens if the Trump administration deems that as not acceptable. What will Ana say then when she is silenced or worse. When you ok acts of retribution by Trump you are the next in line for retribution

I think Kimmel’s cancelling is unfair…but not to be shocked about. These shows, like Colbert’s, are commercial ventures -not first and foremost lighthouses of free speech. Ever see talk shows from the 50s,and how suckup they were? We had more confrontational talk shows moving into the 60s and 70s -but that was not guaranteed to last.

I think Kimmel and Colbert need to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and come back on different streaming platforms which Trumpkins cannot shut down.

I tried finding it online, but Tom Snyder (talkshow host from the 70s…) was once told by censors that he couldn’t say a certain thing because of “standards and practices”. He asked: what are these “standards and practices”. The censor said, well, they’re in a book and all broadcasters have to agree to them. He asked: can I see them? He was told: no.

What’s interesting is now they are attempting to introduce such censorship to the Internet, by requiring age/id verification. THAT is something to scream about! The broadcast airwaves were never free…

This not about Kimmel or Colbert not being able to find another source of income. It is about government control of media. If you think Trump will not come after online media you live in a fantasy world. Trump is playing right out of the Orban playbook. Orban 1st attacked education then media in the same manner as Trump. The only reason neither have gone full Nazi is because this is 2025 and the 1940’s..

  • Trump IS coming after online media; we do have to fight that immediately.

  • I cared not a wit about their incomes (though I imagine they won’t be sleeping on the sidewalk anytime soon…); it’s about getting their challenges back online ASAP.

I was just observing that guaranteeing unfettered speech on broadcast TV is harder. If we should succeed in throwing the bums out, we can get back a more libertine FCC chairman. Then corporations who OWN these broadcast shows will be less intimidated…

I hear they want to run a Kirk tribute in place of Kimmel’s slot?

THAT earns a Disney boycott!

I wasn’t thrilled with what Ana said, either, but she’s proven herself again and again. So, I give her the benefit of the doubt. She is human, and she is visibly frustrated. I think she had a moment when she was more in her head than thinking about what the audience was hearing. I, for one, have not heard the joke, and thought that one sentence shared revealed very little. That’s why it helped me that Cenk mentioned it was part of a joke, which sadly they are restricted from airing.

I did not view her words as defending the suspension. I was struck by how deliberative she was being about the matter, and yes, that required more context. But during the show, she also left herself on mute and had to shuffle her paperwork around. Ana was being a person, who is also affected by the news. She won’t “get it right” every time, and it’s that humanity that brings out the best in her coverage of most topics.

I don’t know where this “bow down” and “TYT framing” vibe comes from. I do not feel like they rant at me. I may pause to reflect a bit more when my immediate response differs from theirs, but I see that as a good thing. And in my opinion, TYT is always encouraging us to think for ourselves. Ana included.

I almost wish I had a Disney subscription so that I could cancel it. I hope that all these greedy networks keep losing viewers. Disney was already so thirsty with its Hulu and ESPN bundles. They didn’t want to do deals with other streaming services. They pulled everything so that they could maximize their profits, and I hope that isolationist model bites them in the ass. They’ve been playing the “liberal candy coating and bigot on the inside” for a LONG TIME.

Nah; go streaming. I’m surprised Colbert has not done it by now.

He could do a great alternate reality sketch where he wakes up to find everything that happened was a bad dream; goes to the studio to suck up to Disney; then SMASHES the entire notion with a teardown!

Having contemplated it some more: using the FCC to intimidate Kimmel is a stealth move. Not technically illegal, but it’s a case of raising the hot water slowly before the frog can notice.

I think Kimmel should get back on the air ASAP on a streaming platform; we should boycott the bejesus out of Disney; and we should have an alternative in the midterms to just the corporate+AIPAC co-opted Dems, to throw out the bums (including the FCC commissioner…)

And I have to throw out this obligatory disclaimer; anybody applauding Kirk getting shot for exercising his speech rights (which Kimmel did NOT do…) should be shunned. I had no sympathy for the lady in Central Park who lost her job when she used the police to get a man wrongfully arrested; and I have no sympathy if you proclaim killing Kirk was understandable, and then lost your job.

I don’t applaud the United Healthcare guy getting killed by Mangione either; although you have to admit he was a schizophrenically evil guy that the legal system should have checked years ago…

That has already happened. The Canary Institute, or whatever they call it posted her name and employment on their website, urging it’s members to harass her. She received death threats from many of their followers. They wanted to get her fired, but that wasn’t gonna happen, so they reached out to her husband’s employer. As far as I can tell, they are still at it. Ana’s response? She doubled down on her support for Palestinians, and began calling these clowns out on the show. Ain’t nobody gonna silence her.

Regarding Kimmel’s comments, I think it’s a matter of interpretation. When he said that those on the Right is trying to convince everyone that the shooter was anything other than one of them, Cenk and Ana seemed to think Kimmel was claiming that the guy was a right winger. In my opinion, he was simply saying they were trying to convince everyone that he was on the Left. Of course, none of are in Kimmel’s head, so who knows?

I think the more impactful part of his monologue was him mocking Trump’s apparent indifference to the death of his “friend”. We know that Trump regularly watches Kimmel, based on how often he posts responses to the content of his show. My guess is that he heard that comment, got in his feelings, and did what he always does; he leveraged the power of his office to get the guy fired. Just my 2 cents, @jlr1951

Love your point about interpretation. It’s an especially tricky element because we all have different information in our heads. Even within ourselves, a joke that landed wrong/right one decade sounds different in another.

I thought it was the affiliates that wanted to do that, not Disney.

But it’s hard to organize a boycott on the affiliates; so you try and get Disney to cut them loose.

“Shit rolls downhill…”

Has Disney said they disagree with the FCC’s decision? [but will follow the law] (they could even say: “respectfully disagree…”)

By the way: Disney could assist with the setup of Kimmel on streaming. I think I heard they own Hulu? Kimmel could stipulate a minimum dollar amount they spend to promote it…

Jimmy Kimmel & the FCC: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

THAT’s the way you do it!

Has ABC made a statement yet that they disagree with the FCC’s threat? (again, so much as “respectfully disagree”??)

He STILL needs to do streaming; post the stream a week or two after the broadcast, the way John Oliver does it.

It would be a pretty funny footnote if the outcome of their trying to take him down, he becomes more popular than when he was confined to broadcast channels…

Maybe other media will now actually encourage shows to take pot shots!
