Something you have to appreciate, Francesca: when you have spent 30 years working on the Dem side as Cenk has (and what has it been for Ana? 20??), and you get ignored, dissed, and pushed back at every turn by the Dems as Turks has, it can make you very bitter. I like that Cenk brings arguments with some piss, vinegar, and good sarcasm; but on occasion he can get a little rude because his emotions overtake him. I think that FraniFio WANTED this to happen. It’s not like she didn’t already have another 2x a week show over on another channel already. And if you look at the YouTube views of her videos over the last 2 months you will see the every time she went after Cenk or just had his name in the title of a video she got 3x the views as her other non-TYT related videos.

So when the governor of Maine was at the White House, Trump singled her out over the issue. Why? Maine is fairly anti-Trump. He chose that issue precisely because it was a wedge issue; his advisors (guys like Miller…) knew that not all Maine voters would be down with it. He was looking to divide and conquer.
Her answer (“we’ll see you in court”) was an acceptable one. But she kinda blew it; there would have been a fantastic response she could have given to him. She got a second chance at bat, when he was asking for an apology a couple of days ago, and she gave an argument based on principles of civil liberties. Technically correct, but not an argument that will resonate with most of America. The response she should have made was (ideally the first time…):
“Mr.President; right now people are terrified with the issues of rising food and housing costs. Why are you so focused on that issue right now? I think your priorities are completely wrong; people want you to focus on the issue of the economy, and remedying it in an expeditious manner.”
Now these wedge issues touch on the strategy that will be needed for an Independent movement. As far as I can see, there are three approaches you can have for an Independent alliance, as Sanders is now finally realizing will be needed. Having rallies alone, no matter how good their turnout, is not going to result in legislative change. You need candidates in Congress; you need them as a choice on the ballots come election time. [for those who don’t know: as an Independent, you can get balloted by petition.]
Independents draft a LAUNDRY LIST of all positions you should have if you are in a proposed Independent alliance. That will be impossible to do; it will descend into furious infighting, such as Emma Vigland was demonstrating in that video.
Avoid codifying what you stand for as a group of Independents, to sidestep such infighting. That will end up as a herd of cats; voters will be confused as to what you stand for.
Or how about this? (and I’m sorry; I know I have posted this elsewhere on this forum, but it’s relevant to the wedge issues that Cenk and Francesca were divided over…): instead of a laundry list, keep it down to the shortest list possible. What should that list say? Well, we don’t need to cover issues already covered by the Dems. An Independent alliance can run on the shortlist of two sunmary issues neglected by both parties but wanted by most all of Americans: worker rights and anti-pollution. Those are the two issues neglected by the Duopoly Parties because it impacts the profits of the owners of the parties.
“What about Trans rights? Immigration policy? DEI??..” You know what? As alliance members, NOTHING stops you from advancing those causes in your capacity as Independent Representatives, possibly working together with members of other parties (as Sanders has demonstrated IS possible; he’s an Independent, NOT a Dem…) As a collective group though, you do not open yourself to division on wedge issues and losing on ALL fronts -then the two biggest issues ignored by both parties gets the same attention it got at the last election: NONE.
And how do you enforce the focus on those issues? How do you prevent someone like a Bannon running in such an alliance and then folding to a Trump?? That’s where you need a committee of people who are hard to bribe and have the power to kick somebody out of the alliance (once again: my bet is people who had worked real hard on Sanders’ 2016 campaign would be the best bet; Sanders could choose them wisely…)

Why is nobody mentioning how Cenk shit-talked and misrepresented Francesca numerous times on various podcasts (e.g., Jillian Michaels) and his show and acts like he somehow made her who she is today? Look up her resumé, she made her damn self. Why is nobody mentioning how fucking horribly he treated her on her podcast when she interviewed him? Did he talk to Brian Tyler Cohen or Marc Lamont Hill that way? My husband said if Cenk spoke to me the way he spoke to Francesca, he would’ve kicked his ass. Trust this, he wouldn’t have had to. Does he talk to White Supremacist, Christian Nationalist bigots (Charlie Kirk, anyone?) that way or hold them accountable? (Hint: the answer is no.)

I wrote all of this before watching the posted videos, but now that I have, I want to address one other thing: Ana. I love Ana! We have had very different opinions, and she’s allowed me extreme grace in discussing them. I do not believe she has bad intentions. Quite the opposite, I think she is a deeply loving and caring person. Ana has been through so much trauma in such a short period, and I worry she has not been given (or given herself) the time she needs and deserves to heal. I have great respect and care for Ana, and I wish I could do stem cell therapy in her stead so she could use that time to care for herself and her family. Seriously, I think she’s highly misunderstood and underappreciated.

A lot of people are going after Cenk; and TYT in general, because he has reached out to “the other side” to try to bring some voters back to our side. That was something that FraniFio didn’t like and thought was Cenk giving in or capiculating to the Right. I am fine with her seeing it as that but also ask why Cenk can’t reach out that hand and try to get people back on our side while others; LIKE FRANIFIO, stick with their calling them names and saying they suck? Why not go at it from multilpe sides and get people to switch back as well as taking that hardline stance and not backing down?

If we disagree in the strategy of how to win in the electoral process we have and are currently in the process of trying to save, we shouldn’t call each other names or assume bad intent when we are more or less wanting to achieve the same goals once we theoretically win and are in power. Policy is more important than personality.
On Frani. She’s going to be just fine. I’m actually glad she got fired. It makes her look like a rebel and could get her more followers by juicing the algorithm with clout fights without making her seem like a sub chaser like people who quit and right away said, “look at me I’m pure. I think Ben Gleib is still on because eventhough we disagree vehemently on Israel and the genocide campaign they are conducting, the debate between him and the other host hasn’t descended into ad hominem attacks. Can we get his audience to reward Ben Gleib if he starts calling Cenk a bitch beta male nazi simp cuck for trying to convince Republican voters that they made a mistake and they should vote populist left instead, so that we can test to see if he gets fired? In January, I quit listening to TYT after 18 YEARS because they started adopting right-wing framing on multiple issues beginning around 2020 and culminating last year in relentless attacks on the Democrats in office during a critical election year. Ana even claimed suggestions that Trump would be a fascist dictator if he won was “fear-mongering.” The clear implication was Biden/Harris would be at least as bad, if not worse.
I listened through the election, hoping the change in the party in power would result in a likewise changed, more humbled Cenk and Ana. But the focus through the end of the year remained on the Democratic establishment and how skeptical we should be of attempts on the left to ever reform the Dem Party. I’m no fan of Dems, but I’ve always thought pursuit of a “Red-Brown” alliance was stupid. And now here was my formerly favorite progressive show trying to convince me it isn’t.
Then the final straw came in the aftermath of the L.A. fires. Sadly, but predictably, Cenk focused his attacks on California state and local Democrats rather than on the entire right-wing Republican movement which has been fighting any attempts to counter the devastating effects of climate disruption FOR DECADES. TYT was never great on climate issues, but since their rightward shift began, they’ve gotten way worse.
So I switched from listening to the main show to listening to The Damage Report, and my favorite day of the week was Thursday when Francesca was on, because she’s funny, but also because my politics align more closely with her (and John) than with Cenk and Ana. But now is it even worth it? Clearly, John doesn’t control who he books on his own show. And his content will likely suffer for it.
So I’m undecided at this point. As I am with continuing to participate on this forum. This break with Fran is illuminating. The people here siding with Cenk’s pettiness shows who the commenters are too. Sometimes, I feel like I should make my own “Why I left TYT” video, though I’m just a political junkie with no platform online. I remain, however, a staunch anti-fascist progressive, something I used to think Cenk and Ana were too.

Cenk is rude sometimes -no news story there! When he is, call him out to his face, in-person and online.
Cenk and Francesca (and others like Emma Vigland…) are too emotionally attached to SOME of the issues they are discussing (like: how should we address wedge issues that are used to divide and conquer the Left?).When that happens, you need third party moderation, with the moderator being able to cut the mic when it degenerates into talking over each other. When the cross-talk happens, it’s a waste of everybody’s time.
While Cenk was rude at times, what Francesca did -not saying what she believed to Cenk to his face online- was out of line. I’m completely fine with her calling him a “bitch”, if that’s what she really believes. But say it to his face! And then if you’re sick of it, after saying that so the person can take stock and have a chance to at some point course-correct, walk away.
We have a bunch of gangsters right now that are raping and pillaging Lady Liberty. And I see videos on youtube still being made bemoaning this disagreement. THAT’S THE BURNING ISSUE OF THE MOMENT?!
