I offered on the Ideas page of Operation Hope an addition to the Populist Plank , Gerrymandering. I stated that it is a timely and relevant subject manifest on the show and interviews. This was prescient as last week, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3, that the Voter Rights Act can be subverted . They got rid of Section 2 and 5 of that act, allowing gerrymandering of current maps which allowed representation of 2 Black districts . This is wrong . The Republicans of Louisiana and the Supreme Court are pushing this country back to the days of Jim Crow. Blacks are 33% of the population in Louisiana , so it’s clear by this decision, that their vote doesn’t matter. I wish this was brought up on the main show . If it was , I didn’t see it. If it was fully covered, somebody please let me know. I’m hoping this will come up next week as this is a major step towards the downfall of our country. We have to be vigilant as the Republicans and MAGA have already made plans to intimidate voters going to the midterms . I’m hoping we , as progressives , can bat around solutions to this rampant evil polluting our lives . Thank you, Jack Callahan
Clearly gerrymandering should not be sanctioned.
I could be wrong, but I think this decision will only serve to piss off people who want representational democracy even more.
Districting should be based on a more neutral criteria, such as zip code areas (just one fer’ instance…)
I can sum up the fight now for this country: it will be decided by an enlargement of the Supreme Court. That means a supermajority not only for the midterms, but for 2028 (because you can’t enlarge the court until then, unless you want Vance making the new appointments…)
Israel wants Congress to remain divided; it makes it easier for them to buy off reps. It’s the same playbook that the cartels and monopolies use.
Here’s hoping that Plattner in Maine is the start of something big for a non-Israel First supermajority. I’d like to see a Dem supermajority -but not if they will continue to sign off on no-questions-asked weapons for Israel; not if they will continue to be sockpuppets for Israel in exchange for almighty donations…
Democracy Docket and other law organizations are fighting back this insane decision. I’m hoping the citizens will rise up when they realize where they vote , their vote may not count. Jack
I agree, Jack — this is an extremely bad decision for minority populations across the country, and for our country overall. I don’t care if you’re Democrat or Republican, you deserve to be represented, and this goes against that.
And worse of all, this whole idea that “you can discriminate against voters as long as you don’t call it discrimination” is complete BS, and the Supreme Court knows it.
In Tennessee, where I live, the governor has just announced they’re going to try to redistrict before the November election. I live in the Memphis area — the only solid blue part of the state (there are other small pockets of blue and purple elsewhere, including Nashville). It is also the only city that is “minority majority” (African Americans make up the largest demographic here, and there is also a fairly large Latino population here as well).
The race was turning out to be exciting between the progressive incumbent and his even more progressive challenger, but now they’ll probably gerrymander the hell out of the city to carve out chunks of the city and clump them together with solidly red suburbs and rural parts so that liberals and progressives have zero national representation anywhere in the state.
We are quickly losing any resemblance to democracy.
I totally agree , eclectic . This is devastating for our democracy. I’m hoping Cenk will bring this up on the main show and advocate as much for anti-gerrymandering as he is against Israel taking over our country. By the way, thanks for prodding Cenk on last Friday’s show for a shoutout on my birthday. I reminded him a couple of times, but you ultimately pushed him over the edge, thank you. I feel bad for the other member who had a May 1st birthday , and Cenk neglected him. I think his handle is ZeldaSymphony. Take care, my friend, Jack
No problem at all about making sure Cenk got the message about your birthday — I know they get tons of member comments, super chats, Twitch subs, I don’t know how they keep track of it all!
I still have to finish watching yesterday’s show (I didn’t catch the main part live except the very end) but if he didn’t mention the gerrymandering decision, I’m sure he will eventually. It means all bets are off for the midterms in many states. I’m not sure how you’re supposed to run a campaign if you don’t even know who your constituents will be, or if your district will even exist by November. Crazy and infuriating.
