In an era marked by political division, it’s easy to fall into the trap of seeing people as representatives of their vote instead of as complex, multidimensional human beings. But if there’s one truth that bridges all ideologies, it’s this: no meaningful change or understanding can happen without conversation. Getting along with Trump supporters doesn’t mean compromising your values or pretending to agree. It means choosing empathy over assumption, and curiosity over judgment. People support political figures for a range of reasons economic policy, religious values, concern for national security, distrust of the other side, or personal experiences that shape their worldview. When we reduce someone to a stereotype, we stop seeing them clearly. The key is to listen not to win, but to understand. Ask questions, not to trap someone, but to learn what they really think and why. Most people don’t want to be lectured. They want to be heard. And when people feel heard, they’re more likely to listen in return.Shared experiences, family, work, community, music, even sports, can serve as bridges across ideological divides. Political disagreements shouldn’t erase shared humanity. We can care deeply about justice, fairness, and truth without writing people off because they voted differently. Progress isn’t made in echo chambers. In other words, I am more focused on the people than the labels.
