December 11, 2023, was one of the most horrifying nights of my life, that turned out later to be one of the most blessed, thanks to some heroic members of the community I live in.
It was the night my dog Kevin was hit by a car. He became trapped under it, and I crawled under the car to be with him while community members worked at jacking up the car to free him. I thought I saw him die right in front of me. He looked me in the eyes even as the light of life appeared to dim in his.
I called out to our rescuers, “You can stop hurrying, he’s gone.” Someone on the driver’s side said “His tail’s wagging!” So my tune immediately changed to “Then hurry! Please hurry!”
And our rescuers did, working swiftly and efficiently. Some friends helped me get Kevin to the local animal hospital for emergency treatment.
There I talked with a vet tech and told her about the light seemingly fading out of his eyes which I had mistaken for his passing. She said to me that he probably relaxed completely once I was able to get under the car and be with him.
I can’t think of too many beings, besides my boy, who trust me so completely. I’m humbled and sincerely grateful.
I am so grateful to all who helped us that night and to all who showed us concern about Kev’s recovery and healing.
They all made it possible for us to have another year together that, without their help, we might not have had. And it’s been our best yet. I never take him for granted. I’m deeply thankful that he is still me, healthy and whole.
Happy Holidays to all!
