Sheer distraction and misdirection, ladies and gentlemen, so corporate news does not highlight the real moves afoot that the electorate would object to. Unless he were to show up, for example, with attache cases of money for each Greenlander (which given present economic circumstances is a colossal impossibility…), he/they know full well that these regional designs are just fantasy. What could he offer them? His NFTs (link)? Pieces of his suit? Tesla shares that are dropping?? (link…)
There is some negotiating latitude with Panama, because of the Gatun Lake being damaged by climate change (used to refill the locks of the Panama Canal…), and the Panama Canal needs to be widened for newer ships. Mexico is coming online with a shipping container transit line across their isthmus, so that could be a source of competition for Panama; Nicaragua could be a source of competition too with their huge lake and China probably being interested in funding a canal there, but Ortega has a knack for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory for his country, given that he ascribes to Putin-style game theory: "Nobody is to win but me!’
“Don’t mind that we’re slashing medicare…and increasing social security payments…that energy costs are going up thanks to policies intended to appease my Big Oil donors…that we won’t address REALLY fixing the worker visa programs”…and on and on.
The Brits have a great term for this: being “too clever by half”. After having awoken from their stupor that Trump had their best interests at heart with the worker visa programs, some of MAGA will now see this as the plain and simple distraction that it is.
“Doesn’t he always just say crazy things??” Sure, like pondering out loud if drinking cleaning fluid might combat covid. But what you will note is people in his admin and the Repub Party are going along with the geopolitical fantasies, to lend them credibility, and corporate media focuses on it to change the subject away from topics that will impact their profits (add to that: media outlets know outrageous stories promote click-through$, and Musk+Trumpers play off that incentive…) That’s just a clear administration+Repub strategy of distraction…
I’m just wildly prognosticating here; I could be proven completely wrong. But I am expecting to see a new Treaty Organization based on NATO, without the US, Hungary, and perhaps Germany. If that happens, Greenland and Canada will have a big incentive to also join it thanks to Trump’s theatrical distraction stunts.
The reason for that new org? So that the Ukraine can join it in a peace deal, so they have an assurance that Putin won’t invade them after ceding some eastern territories and Crimea to Russia. If Putin does not like that because he won’t get to have his Soviet do-over in so many years, then that org will be at war with Russia -the reason for Sweden and Finland presently preparing for such a scenario.
If Germany does not join that new org, Eastern Germany will come to regret it. Where did Putin used to work as a KGB officer?
UPDATE: Another possibility is Greenland and Canada have indicated that they want in on a successor NATO organization to provide post-peace protection to the Ukraine, Stupid Hitler has gotten wind of that, and he’s trying to effectively threaten them from joining -they are both situated across from Russia. No matter: it’s plain+simple distraction; he won’t be able to act militarily against Greenland or Canada, even if he were to try to do so in a covert manner (last time Oliver North tried that, it didn’t work out too good; right??) It’s a non-starter; the point is to distract from the terrible ant-worker policy changes that are in the pipe. BOTH the Repubs and the supermajority of corporate Dems will push them through if workers are distracted with this sideshow.
