The US has fallen into this classic stereotype of “conquering acquisitive empire-building violent bully-state”, and to me, the topic of Canada is the best example. We have threatened their sovereignty (?!), have not apologized for it, and we expect them to discuss and behave as though it is business as usual.
I would like to see TYT hosts discuss this more often. It is a rich topic, particularly given the often rational responses of Canadian leaders and citizens.
One thing I do wish a Canadian would say:
“US citizens have collectively decided through their Democratic system to imbue Donald Trump with the power of the Presidency, and he is using that strong power to threaten the sovereignty of Canada. We will respond by moving to reduce trade and activity with your country, and by working to grow trade and activity with other countries. If US citizens did not want this to happen, or if they decide to change their minds in the future, then they need to communicate to their elected President that they do not want him or his followers to engage in threatening the sovereignty of Canada, and that he and his supporters need to apologize for their comments in this area.”
Canadians have made many rational comments in response to Trump, but this is just kind of my fantasy of an opening paragraph I’d like to hear.
Luttnick and Trump continue to dis Canada (why is Luttnick even still in office?! “And now let’s here from the guy who was serially lying about his interactions with Epstein!”)
Canada is being forced to have a stronger trade relationship with the EU given the intransigence of the US.
It always made sense to me for Quebec to do more trade with northern Europe. When they had tried to separate, they couldn’t make the argument that they were self-sufficient given that they relied so much on the rest of Canada.
I think they find it very embarrassing that a good relationship is getting burnt by the US, and they are putting it out of their minds (not to excuse that!)
I can’t agree with this possible explanation. I just don’t think that TYT hosts really do this much, if at all. If they thought it was wrong for the US to do this to a good relationship, I think they’d spend time on it.
As I said, maybe they’ve covered it and I just missed it, but my own hypothesis is that they have become somewhat one-note with respect to the Israel/Palestine/Iran/etc. story and while there is room for coverage of other topics, and they do cover other topics, Cenk and Ana do not strongly understand the meaning and importance of the Canada story. I’ll be happy to learn if I am wrong.
I don’t know about Iadarola or the other de facto frequent hosts. Maybe some of them have tackled the issue. But for now, I am treating this as a hole in their coverage.
If Congress thinks they can shrug their shoulders while the administration continues to f’ with Canadian Trade, and then they can blame if off on Trump/the Repubs after Trump is gone (“hey -it wasn’t use!”), they will have a rude awakening…
Thanks, good to see the damage report step up. I have no way to know how much coverage they might have done previously but, either way, it’s good to see it. Hopefully Cenk and Ana and the others will also come to understand how important this is. The US threatening Canada of all things! Some of the most fair-minded decent good-neighbor people in the world!
That was a sweet deal for both our countries; and I shudder to think what Canada will do after Trump is gone and Congress had played their “hurts to be you!” shtick while he was in office!
I’ve found at least two good youtubers and I get my information and analysis from them, as to Canada. The first is this very reasonable guy who goes by “Guard The Leaf”. He has built an audience by remaining steadfast, clear and reasonable in the face of the US threatening the sovereignty of his country.
There are some other good ones, but I can’t quite find them by name at this time.
All I can say to that pundit is that we are deeply ashamed of most of the present people in Congress!
Trump and Luttnick effectively sought to mug Canada (“Who cares about a long-term trade relationship?! We will be partying by then on Epstein Island!” -correction: Kushner Island…)
There’s one other guy who I think has been showing thought leadership on this shocking (to me) issue of the US threatening Canadian sovereignty, but I can’t quite find him at just this moment.
Getting back to Guard The Leaf, one of the things I love is the excellence he has brought, over a long time now, to shining a light on the ridiculousness of border-state business and policy leaders, including MAGA voters in some cases (we usually have to speculate as to which ones) … the ridiculousness of these people going on TV and saying that they are trying to figure out ways to repair the levels of business, but failing to mention the actual reason that Canadians are staying away. It’s not the exchange rate, or the weather, or some vague notion of political disagreements. It is Trump threatening the sovereignty of Canada, and yes, the tariffs and such, but … can you imagine how the US would react to a country threatening our sovereignty? So, we have these geniuses on TV saying golly gosh they’d love to see an increase in the border business. Well… try being honest about what caused harm to the border business. I’ve never, in my life, that I recall, seen a more clear example of TV interviewers and those they interview more absurdly avoiding discussing the actual topic. Guard The Leaf has done a wonderful job of shining a light on this, and not letting it pass. I wonder why TYT has not been stronger in shining a light on this whole aspect of the US/Canada rift… and the bizarre media coverage and the bizarre response of some business owners and policy makers. Well, maybe I have missed it.
