If this deal actually goes through I’m afraid of what it will do to the upcoming elections. A lot of Trumpers will be back on the bandwagon when they might have otherwise voted differently. I’m glad there is a deal and I hope Israel doesn’t screw it up but I worry about our big blue wave being a trickle again come election time.
Nobody is claiming Israel will stop in Lebanon; Iran has said there is no deal if Israel continues in Lebanon.
So what are we to conclude will be the outcome? That Trump and Congress will rein in Israel (by pausing arms…) if they continue to do strikes in Lebanon?? Come on! This is just a play to goose the markets for a few more days/weeks…
PS Don’t let this thread title (“Peace in our time…”) mislead you into thinking I feel Trump is trying to appease (though he is CLEARLY trying to appease the markets!!) I am just thinking his ““peace deal”” is just as precarious and illusory as Chamberlain’s was!
As for appeasing Iran: yeah, sure, he HAS TO if he doesn’t want a global depression. A smarter president wouldn’t have gotten himself into that situation in the first place.
We as Americans have to just suck it all up and get him out of office ASAP.
But I don’t see how we will have any peace when Israel won’t give it up on [at least] Lebanon (if not also Gaza…)

It’s one thing to express displeasure; quite another to get the Repubs to pause military aid if they don’t get the fuck out of Lebanon [and turn over the policing of cross-border missile strikes to the UN, as it was being done -a French UN soldier recently got killed doing just that …]
I am super duper skeptical that Trump would draw such a line, and also say the NDAA is a terrible idea. But he’s welcome to try and blow my mind…
The entire alleged reason for the Israelis being in Lebanon is to curtail missile launches across the border. If the Israelis weren’t full of shit (we all know it’s all about grabbing land…), they could go to the UN and make an offer of withdrawal from Lebanon contingent upon the deployment of MORE UN peacekeeping forces to curtail such launches. Even if the UN were to fail enforcing that, the Israelis could always threaten to reinvade.

As for Gaza, the only hope there is an EU embargo/sanctions; recognition of Israel being an apartheid state.
Don’t expect help to be coming for Gaza from the US anytime soon, when both parties in Congress AND the administration have already been bought off! Until some sort of a revolution here that ends with Trump being kicked to the curb, the Party Duopoly being broke up, and the Supreme Court being enlarged, we have become a banana republic. Spare me any expositions on the Repubs being the responsible party. It was the fault of both the Repubs AND Dems -when they refused to have an Open Convention and we ended up with the selection by the Party of Harris!

I think the Taliban in Afghanistan are being led by Mossad to skirmish with Pakistan, to destabilize them. Pakistan can provide a nuclear security guarantee to Iran and/or Turkey, and Israel does NOT like that!
