I don’t know who my congress person is. I could look up the name, but within a few minutes, I would have forgotten it. It’s just not information I need to know, so my brain won’t allow me to allocate the brain cells to remember it. I feel that many people are in the same boat as me.
This is why I think it’s important to put more emphasis on the congress person’s district when talking about a congress person.
Take for instance, the recent story of the guy who was gone from congress for 4 months and claimed it was because of “depression”. What district was that guy from? If you listened carefully, you’d know he was from New Jersey. But if you didn’t listen carefully, you’d just remember that he’s Republican. Not enough emphasis is put on where these people are from. What needs to happen is put more emphasis on the exact location so people who live in that guy’s district know that they are talking about their congress person.
Throughout my life, it’s very possible that there has been a scandal with my congress person that I just never realized was my congress person because when it was covered, no emphasis was put on that congress person’s district, so I never noticed I could vote against that person.
Instead of just saying “New Jersey congress person”, you should instead say “Congress person from New Jersey’s 7th district, which includes the rural area west of New York City and east of Easton, NJ and includes areas such as Washington, NJ, Bedminster, NJ, Sparta Township, Hackettstown, East Amwell Township and Mount Olive township”. That way the audience knows exactly who can vote against this person. Even if you don’t live in that district, if you show the map, you may know someone who lives in that area that you can remind to vote against. I don’t know my friends by which district they vote in, I know my friends by the name of the area they live in.
