Reaching out to conspiracy theory believers, cult members, and those trapped in echo chambers takes empathy, open-ended questions (‘What convinced you?’), and gradual dialogue. These approaches build trust and plant seeds for change. Have you tried them?
The Roads to reaching out to conspiracy theory believers…
Summary
Tips for reaching out to family members who believe in conspiracy theories, emphasizing empathy, patience, and gradual change.
Highlights
- Build rapport and trust; avoid judgment.
- Ask open-ended questions to encourage dialogue.
- Promote critical thinking about sources.
- Introduce evidence-based alternative explanations.
- Be patient; changing beliefs takes time.
- Focus on shared goals and values.
- Provide credible resources gradually.
Key Insights
- Empathy Over Judgment: Building trust through empathy can foster more open conversations, making individuals less defensive about their beliefs.
- Encouraging Dialogue: Open-ended questions allow individuals to articulate their thoughts, which can reveal inconsistencies in their beliefs and promote self-reflection.
- Critical Thinking: Teaching them to evaluate sources and question motivations behind information can empower them to seek truth independently.
- Alternative Explanations: Presenting logical, evidence-based alternatives can help dismantle unfounded beliefs without confrontation, easing the process of change.
- Patience is Key: Expecting immediate change can lead to frustration; gradual planting of seeds of doubt can be more effective in the long run.
- Shared Values: Redirecting focus to common interests can create unity and reduce reliance on divisive beliefs that may isolate them from family.
- Resource Sharing: Providing balanced educational content in small increments helps avoid overwhelming them, making it easier to digest new information.

Great list, and I can tell you this does work. I spent years working on my dad, someone who hated FDR and though Richard Nixon was a good man. In the last years of his life, he voted for Obama twice.

Hello from a believer! Ancient aliens is a top 5 fav for me, seen all eps up to the 13th season so far. Believe in hollow earth and the hollow moon stuff. We did go to the moon though. Have had all vaccines and 3 boosters (gave up after that) and hate everything alex jobes says. The earth is round.
Will always be keen to debate Cenk on these subjects because its my one beef with him hating on conspiracy believers.
My main reason for believing is it would dismantle nearly all religions, give us all a chance to finally progress in so many aspects and live forever travelling the stars.
It sucked one day when Cenk lumped in all flat earth dickheads with any other theorist, felt very attacked but didnt change the end goal. I guess a suggestion would be to ask why people believe in things, how it would benifit them. Either Cenk doesnt bring it up in general and sticks to his message it will bring them in, or just tries not to alienate or ostracize harmless things.
Not taking the covid vax was harmful to others, believing the moon is a satellite doesnt do anything what so ever.
Sorry for the rant but yet another different perspective for you

Curious, have you seen The WHY files?
A.J. tells the story and then whether or not it can be debunked.
The hollow moon theory is compelling yet I lean more toward it being like a giant pumice stone.

I love that you said this! We all believe in things that others don’t, and when it’s harmless, why attack?

Yeah ive seen all why files to date aswell aj is great but i dont trust that channel… seems to push more right wing with a massive following.
Having a grandad that was a 3rd rank grandmaster freemason kinda prepped me for even more wacked out stuff. (Theyre not as bad as people say though, like my nana could go to every meeting)
If you into that stuff and reading books, “the holy blood and the holy grail” by michael baigent is a big one for people like my grandad.

I find that he challenges convention, which definitely is not “conservative”.

Thats so true. He deffinitly plays a character though which is supposed to be in the middle and its more the fish that gives the right wing vibe but he doesnt have a left wing advocate.
Does it seem over there that the “left wing” is less into believing the conspiracies ? Or that they just dont like to admit it?
Plus i supposed its so much different for you all because alot of the theories involve your tax dollars being spent corruptly not mine, so it would cause a hatred for gov in a different way per se.

Did you see the latest video about H*tler?
My favorite part was Hecklefish’s joke after AJ talking about how the press at the time, German or American, downplaying or hiding either Adolf Hitler’s Parkinson’s disease and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s polio (around 13:27):
“Ah, the media would lie about a president’s health? I don’t believe it. … What? Too soon?”
nahhh not too soon but indeed bloody great vid. Have you seen any of star talk? With that Neil Tyson fella, he is like an idol but says annoying stuff like alot of these conspiracies are based in racism, (so im guessing by hitler going to those other countries, thats supposed to be propaganda against them somehow, or the ancient alien one is to say the eguiptians couldnt build the stuff themselves so its against the middle east intelligence etc) whats your take on that? Or the left wing over there in general if you have an observation on that?
Neil deGrasse Tyson’s insight on conspiracies tied to racism holds merit. The “ancient aliens” theory can diminish non-European achievements, and theories like Hitler escaping South America may distract from accountability. Still, shows like The Why Files offer fun storytelling—what matters is framing them responsibly.
It does hold alot of merit and good point good point. Alot of people could be telling them in bad faith and the why files doesnt really seem to do that i guess. To my comment earlier about him not having a left wing advocate, it does make sense if he is running a business and knows what will bring the most viewers. AJ mightve mentioned he did movie writing or something? He deffinitly has a skill for it all.
Noone can blame Neil deGrasse Tyson for seeming to put that wall straight up when his co-host was talking about it one time… ahwell.
