To encapsulate the idea he tries to argue in this video: “Sometimes inaction is the highest form of action” (zen koan…)
[FYI: I could have posted to the War/Gaza thread, but it’s a bit of a cul de sac; when people see a controversial forum topic like this, they are more likely to check it out…]
I just saw this before checking in here, and I hadn’t seen a David Doel video in a while! I choose to see it as a sign that I should help nudge this conversation along even though my answer will be boring. I have no idea. Though I do generally wish celebrities took their power & influence more seriously rather than selectively deciding when they’re aware of being public figures, I don’t like the idea of pushing someone to be anything they are not. And honestly, if they are supportive of Israel’s actions, maybe their silence is better. What if that expressed view changed a fan’s mind? At the end of the day, celebrities are just people that can be influenced by systemic shit, media, and money too. Look at JK Rowling! Maybe if I closely followed celebrity social media feeds, the silence would feel more deafening. But as it stands, I have no idea if celebrities “should” speak up. It’d be great if they lent support, but I’m a lot more concerned with the politicians that speak up against Gaza. Lindsey Graham’s “God will smite USA” vibes are still pissing me off! I think time will tell celebrities what they “should have done.” Some may be surprised by their global fanbase’s reactions in future too.
