@Galphar Sucking up to the Non-MAGA GOPers would have never hurt her chances if the Democrats did what was needed to win, and if they were doing what they needed to win, thye would not have needed to. I am not rewriting out everything I have posted in the last couple of months, go read my collected posts (Kamala Harris Will Likely Win, But Democrats Might Screw It Up) if you want to understand what happened.
Nobody else wanted to run.
Trump got more votes and electoral votes than Harris. Thatās objectively true. He won. Harris lost. The exit polls are showing it was white men and latino men who made the difference. The top issues were immigration, the economy, and abortion. They didnāt like how democrats handled immigration and thats the ball game. Iām not happy about it but weāre not going to act like the election was ours to win. The numbers donāt lie.
Right! That was on them.
Looks to me like job/economic insecurity outweighed abortion at the present time.
I think most people are not all that concerned about immigration when their job is secure. The histrionics about immigrants being dangerous, that was Fox News+MAGA BS. Do I think immigrant refugees should be screened for violent history? Most definitely. But you know the Repubs blocked Dem-sponsored immigration legislation that was previously supported by them, so they were full of it.
I think the problem with the border crisis is that somewhere along the way, not just in the US but also in Europe, trying to provide sequestered refugee settlement got conflated into illegal immigration. Considering we screwed around with the health of a number of countries south of the border in the 50s-70s, taking SOME responsibility for providing emergency refugee settlement is reasonable. SOME people on the Left would decry spartan accommodations as āinternment campsā, but these refugees were never guaranteed a path to citizenship; the idea was to provide them REFUGE from a dangerous situation: basic food, simple medical services, minimal shelter. If they can cool their heels in a spartan refugee camp, they can try for citizenship -but they should warn them it could take a couple of years. The mass influx is triggered by an 80s Mexican practice that was quite loosey-goosey. That was beneficial to US farmers, but in the present numbers it often no longer is. If refugees are willing to live for years in such spare conditions, and they have no violent history (and the Feds have plenty of time to confirm that!), let them apply for citizenship and it be evaluated on whether they can make a case to a court that their situation is dangerous in their home country. But once they hear what the wait could be, many will pass on it.
Another escape valve on the immigration problem is that the US should adopt Franceās practice of the Foreign Legion. Getting people to enlist is never easy, soā¦ If an immigrant serves in hazardous duty for years, thatās a pretty damn good indication as to their seriousness in wanting to be a good citizen.
Most people do NOT find their jobs secure at the present time, that they have the ability to cover inflation increases should they happen again. That was the numero uno issue for many (not that abortion rights arenāt important to many; but maintaining economic viability presently outweighed itā¦)
I think progressives should abandon national elections and focus on statewide issues where we can win. 57% of voters in Florida approved abortion up to six weeks. Thatās massive! It didnāt get the required 60% to pass but this is an opportunity to take the legs out from under the conservatives.
How can we expect a progressive president when we donāt have a progressive country?
I think Jimmy Kimmel said it best: āIt was a terrible night for women, for children, for the hundreds of thousands of hard-working immigrants who make this country go,ā he said, trying to hold back tears. āFor health care, for our climate, for scientists, for journalists, for justice, for free speech. It was a terrible night for poor people, for the middle class, for seniors who rely on Social Security, for our allies in Ukraine, for NATO and democracy and decency. It was a terrible night for everyone who voted against him and guess what? It was a bad night for everyone who voted for him too, you just donāt realize it yet.ā
Now that this is in the can, I hope somebody in the Dem Party spills the beans: the day Biden stepped down, NOT A SINGLE DEM OFFERED TO STEP UP IF THERE WERE TO BE AN OPEN CONVENTION. Given the number of potential candidates, I find it hard to believe that was a decision arrived at independently. My guess? There was a frantic phone campaign to all potential candidates to get them to not oppose Harris, not call for an Open Convention (they were effectively intimidatedā¦) They have little to lose at this point calling out who made those calls, right? It would be great to know who the specific puppetmasters for Biden/Harris wereā¦
