Here’s the Google Doc from tonight’s meeting:
Friends, the tide is turning! We have an unprecedented opportunity to reclaim our democracy from the outsized influence of corporations and big money. In 2025, there are not one, but three incredible constitutional amendments introduced. This is a moment to be optimistic, to be energized, and to act!
Here’s a look at these three vital proposals:
-
The Citizens Over Corporations Amendment: Introduced by Senator Adam Schiff and Representatives Joe Neguse, Jim McGovern, and Summer Lee, this amendment aims to directly overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. It clarifies that constitutional rights belong to human beings, not corporations. It also gives Congress and the states the power to set reasonable limits on campaign spending and allows for public financing of elections.
-
The Free and Fair Elections Amendment: Championed by Congressman Jim McGovern, this sweeping amendment goes straight to the heart of the issue. It would explicitly prohibit corporations from spending money in federal elections and cap individual contributions at $1,000. It also includes a groundbreaking provision to mandate that Congress create a public campaign financing system.
-
The We the People Amendment: Introduced by Representative Pramila Jayapal, this amendment is focused on a clear, powerful idea: corporations are not people, and money is not speech. It aims to reverse Citizens United and end corporate personhood, while also mandating that all political contributions and expenditures be publicly disclosed.
Let’s use this incredible moment to push for change. Talk about these amendments with your friends, family, and neighbors. Share this information. And most importantly, reach out to your representatives in Congress. Let them know they need to support these efforts to get money out of politics.
